Technical
Committees Take to the Field
Some
of the technical Committees of the St. Lucia Bureau of Standards are
taking to the field. The
committees are visiting manufacturing and production plants to
experience the respective processes first hand.
This, they expect, will inform the development of the various
draft Standards currently being developed.
The visits allow the Technical Committees to compare what obtains
with what is being proposed in the draft standards (which are based
on international standards). In
that way, it is hoped that the finalized and adopted Saint Lucia
National Standard will be both practical and applicable and will not
become a technical barrier to trade.
Recently
the Mechanical Engineering Products and Practices subcommittee of
the SLBS Construction and Engineering Technical Committee visited
the Texaco LPG Filling Station in Cul-de-Sac to observe the process
for filling, storage and handling of Liquid Petroleum Gases (LPGs).
The visit facilitated the development of the draft Standard
for Specification for
Filling, Handling, Storage, Transportation and Location of Portable
Cylinders for Liquefied Petroleum Gases which is now out for
public review and comment.
More
site visits of this nature are scheduled by other Technical
committees of the SLBS. The Bakeries Working Group, which is working
on the draft standard, DLNS
66:2005 – Specification for Bread and Rolls and draft Code of
Practice DSLCP 8:2004 –
Code of Practice for Bakeries will shortly be visiting a number
of local bakeries.
Other
standards currently out for public comment are:
-
DLNS 70– Specification for Aggregates for Concrete
-
DLNS 67– Specification for
Vinegar
-
DLNS 87– Specification for
Ice Cream and
-
DLNS/IEC 989 – Separating
Transformers, autotransformers, variable transformers and
reactors.
The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards encourages stakeholders,
consumers, manufacturers and the general public to continue playing
their part by reviewing these draft standards available at all
libraries, the Ministry of Commerce, Chamber of Commerce, SLISBA,
Consumer Affairs. Comments and suggestions on the proposed standards
must be submitted to the Bureau before the indicated final day for
comments.
