National
Standards Catalogue 2004
Release Date:
13 January 2005
FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
The
St. Lucia Bureau of Standards has released the 2004 catalogue of St.
Lucia National Standards. The thirty five page catalogue lists the
ninety standards and codes of practice adopted by St. Lucia as at
July 31st, 2004. The documents are listed numerically and by
subject. There is a section which highlights all compulsory
(mandatory) St. Lucia standards.
A
brief abstract on each of the standards is contained in the
catalogue, to facilitate easy understanding of the content of the
document. The catalogue also contains general information about the
operations, functions and technical committees of the Bureau. Draft
standards under development by the various technical committees, as
well areas to being explored for standardization are also
highlighted in the publication.
A
copy of the Standards catalogue has been distributed free of charge
to all manufacturers, exporters, government departments and other
agencies on the island. The Bureau’s Head of Information Services,
Sariah Best-Joseph says ready access to standards information is a
key requirement of these sectors. The catalogue is therefore
expected to be a very useful and easy reference document for persons
who are interested in obtaining information about the Bureau, its
operations, services available and more importantly the national
standards of St. Lucia.
“We
are working towards improving our information service offer to our
clients. Having the catalogue at your disposal means not having to
call the Bureau to determine whether a national standard exists for
a particular area or subject, or even ascertaining the cost of the
standard, as this is all highlighted in the catalogue. We also
expect the catalogue to facilitate easy ordering and purchasing of
standards” explains the Information Head.
Standards adopted by St. Lucia are based on regional and
international standards such as that of the International
Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), CODEX Alimentarius (a joint
commission of the World Health Organisation and the Food and
Agricultural Organisation responsible for the development of food
standards), and the Caribbean Regional Organisation for Standards
and Quality (CROSQ).
Orders for standards detailed in the SLBS catalogue can be made by
phone, fax or e-mail to the Bureau. In addition, the Bureau’s
affiliations and connections with the International Organisation for
Standardization, the International Electro technical Commission, the
British Standards Institute and many similar organizations
throughout the world, means that the organisation is able to source
and where necessary purchase standards and technical regulations
which obtain globally for organisations and persons requiring such
information.
