Bakers
Workshop to discuss Quality of Bread and Bakery Operations
Following a number of
meetings and discussions with key stakeholders on practices in the
baking industry, the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards Food Safety
Technical Committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Health,
Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender Relations and the Ministry
of Commerce, Tourism, Investment and Consumer Affairs will be
hosting a two-day workshop for local bakers and bakery operators.
This workshop is an
important part of a project currently being undertaken to improve
the operations and practices of local bakeries and the quality of
bread sold in Saint Lucia. The two-day activity sponsored by Eastern
Caribbean Flour Mills Ltd., ADM Barbados Mills Ltd. and ADM
Caribbean Agro Industries Ltd. (Grenada) will be held from Tuesday
07 to Wednesday 08 June 2005 at the Indies Conference Centre in
Rodney Bay.
The objectives of the
workshop are to provide bakery operators and stakeholders with an
understanding of the requirements of proposed draft National
Standards and to give the bakers an opportunity to make some input
into the draft national standards. The draft standards address
requirements for bread, rolls and buns, as well practices to be
observed in the operation of bakeries.
Bakers will also hear
from key speakers on the competition issues regarding CSME
compliance and the legislative framework that governs the operations
of bakeries Bakers will also be exposed to opportunities and support
available for improving their operations. All bakers and bakery
operators are encouraged to register with the Bureau of Standards
for the activity, which will provide an opportunity to share and
discuss a number of concerns being faced by the sector. A key agenda
item will be moves towards the formation of a National Bakers
Association.
An official opening
ceremony to mark the start of the workshop will be addressed by the
Director of the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards Dr. Alison Plummer,
Chief Environmental Health Officer Mr. Wenn Gabriel, Director of
Consumer Affairs, Mr. Philip Mc. Clauren and Mrs. Silvia Cadasse
Chairperson of the Bakers Working Group of the St. Lucia Bureau of
Standards.
