Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards

SLBS ... Making quality and standards our way of life

World Standards Day 2011

The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS) is preparing to observe World Standards Day (WSD) on October 14th 2011.To mark the observance, the SLBS is hosting a number of activities, to include, a Technical Committee Cocktail Mixer on October 13th,the SLBS/Super J/IGA National Oratorical Competition on October 14th at the National Cultural Centre and two mini exhibitions one in the north and the other in the south of the island.

The theme for this year’s observance is “Standards create confidence globally.” The theme is important as technological advances and globalization of the world economy have made confidence a global asset, and standards being the benchmark by which our confidence is measured.
The Oratorical Competition gives the SLBS an opportunity to raise awareness among the student population of the impact of standards on our world through their research of the theme and associated material on standardization.
This year nine schools have agreed to participate in the competition; the Soufriere, Castries and Leon Hess Comprehensive Schools, St. Joseph’s Convent, St. Mary’s College, Anger, Gros-Islet, Ciceron and Entrepot Secondary Schools.
The SLBS is very grateful to Super J/IGA for sponsoring competitions of this nature over the years since 2004. The sponsorship from Super J/IGA goes a long way to ensure that the SLBS can continue to engage schools on that scale.
Divisional Head of Marketing and Corporate Communication of Consolidated Foods Limited Mrs Sariah Best-Joseph says exercising involving the youth of St. Lucia is always attractive to her organization. She says it is important to keep young people engaged in positive endeavours so that they can continue to impact positively on the society.
This year Super J/IGA has sponsored the SLBS/Super J/IGA National Oratorical Competition to the tune of $7000.00

World Standards Day is an important occasion for the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards. It is a time when the SLBS focus attention on this important area of work which promotes, health and safety and the protection of the environment.

The Technical Committee Cocktail mixer on October 13th, The TC mixer as we call it is an opportunity for the SLBS to show it’s appreciation for the many experts in various sectors who work tirelessly with the SLBS in the development of standards. The SLBS has a collection of 121 standards national and international standards and at any one time a member of that committee would have been involved in work leading to the adoption of these standards. A standard will take anywhere between two to three years for development and throughout this period members of that committee will be engaged in meetings and discussion of the contents of the standard.
