The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS) held a meeting of stakeholders in the Tourism Sector to discuss the draft of a proposed CARICOM Regional Standard for Tourist Accommodation. The standard, developed by the Caribbean Regional Organization for Standards and Quality (CROSQ), addresses the increase in demand for a range of accommodation services, the need to provide quality services consistent with improved visitor satisfaction, safety and security and the promotion of sustainable development and care for the environment.
The Tourist Accommodation Standard also responds to an industry need for a regime of standards which promote quality and consistency in the tourism product. This, government believes, will give a competitive edge to the local tourism product.

Director of the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards Dr. Darius Gabriel told stakeholders that as potential users of the standard they are important in directing the final product since they are well placed to anticipate the effects of the standard on their industry and therefore finalize a product which would benefit both service provider s and users of the service.
Head of the Standards Development Department of the SLBS Mr. Julius James welcomed the turnout, indicating recognition of the importance of the exercise. James said the stakeholder participation was extensive and afforded expert knowledge of trends in the industry, which should be reflected in the Tourist Accommodation Standard.
The consultation also discussed specific concerns of security, the cost to the sector of meeting the requirements of the standard, as well as who will be charged with implementing and ensure compliance with the standard.
The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards SLBS will meet with stakeholders soon for a second round of discussions on the proposed standard.
