The Department of Information Services (IS) carries out a multiplicity of responsibilities as its name suggests. Its mandate may be divided into two main functions: 1) marketing/promotion and communication 2) technical and information services. Under the first category, the IS Department is responsible for shaping the public profile of the Bureau and stimulating interest in its products and services. It must also ensure that the Bureau’s role in the island’s social and economic development is understood and appreciated by its various stakeholders and the public at large. The department performs this function through the following activities:
- Development and carrying out of the marketing plan and strategies of the SLBS
- Design and maintenance of the SLBS website
- Preparation and dissemination of publications (brochures, pamphlets, magazine etc.)
- Coordination of workshop, seminars and similar events to promote and educate its stakeholders and other interested parties on the Bureau’s products, services and programmes
- Liaising and communicating with the electronic and print media via press releases etc. regarding the Bureau’s activities and programmes
- Sale of national and international standards. The SLBS is sole agent for the sale of ISO, ASTM and BSI standards and can offer customers discounts on these standards.
Under the second category of technical and information services, the department carries out the following functions:
- Research and library services regarding standards (national, regional and international) and standardization as well as trade related matters
- Acts as the WTO Enquiry Point for Technical Barriers to Trade matters
- Acts as the Codex Contact Point
- Acts as the liaison between the SLBS and other regional such as CROSQ and international standardization entities or organizations.
